Frequently Asked Questions
Reaching out and asking for help can feel daunting and come with a lot of questions. If you can't find the answer to your question here, please get in touch.
Do I need a referral to book a session?
No, a referral is not required to make a booking or to access support. However, if you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates.
Do you offer appointments in person or via telehealth?
I offer in-person appointments in the Belmont clinic in Geelong or telehealth appointments Australia-wide. I understand the importance of flexibility and accessibility, and online sessions can offer a convenient way for some people to access psychological support.
What should I expect from my first session?
What you can expect from your first session will differ depending on who the client is and the age of the client.
If the appointment is for your child, I will usually meet with parents alone in an initial parent consultation before meeting with your child. This allows parents to freely discuss the reasons for referral, current concerns and what you are hoping to gain from sessions. I will also ask questions about family, developmental history, schooling and general wellbeing. I will then have a subsequent session with your child alone, unless there is a clinical need for you to attend alongside your child.
In my first session with a child or adolescent, I usually spend some time getting to know them, building rapport and developing a safe and collaborative space before commencing intervention.
If the appointment is for parent support, then I will generally meet with either one or both parents in an initial session to gather relevant information before discussing the appropriate parent support intervention.
For adult sessions for women or men wanting perinatal support, I will meet with you individually to discuss your reasons for referral and current support needs. During this session I will also ask questions about your family, your own history and general wellbeing.
How long are the appointments?
Each session is typically 50 minutes long.
Can I get a Medicare rebate?
I am able to provide psychological services under the Better Access initiative with Medicare. You may be able to access rebates for your sessions using a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) and referral from your GP. Clients can access up to 10 rebated sessions under their MHTP, in a calendar year.
If you are not eligible or do not wish to obtain an MHTP, you can attend the appointment as a full fee client.
Is there a cancellation fee?
I understand that sometimes plans change. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, I kindly ask for 48 hours' notice.
Appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice, or failure to attend a session, will incur the full session fee. This cancellation fee is not claimable under Medicare.
Do you provide reports or letters?
Letters of support can be provided when clinically appropriate and aligned with the goals of therapy. Letters of support can be provided after I have seen the client for at least two sessions.
Unfortunately, I do not provide court reports. Please note that reports and letters will be charged at my general hourly consultation rate.
Do you provide assessment reports?
I provide assessment reports for cognitive, educational, autism and ADHD assessments. Psychological assessment reports are not eligible for Medicare rebates. Reports will not be released until fees for the report are paid in full. 50% of the fee for a report is collected at the commencement of writing the report.
